Stage 1: Understanding The Great Commission
Most Christians understand the Great Commission as an important tenet in Christian theology & may know both historically and in our day believers who have made huge sacrifices to spread the Good News in fulfilling this command. Yet, there can remain in the Church many who still lack clarity or who have partial understanding as to what this last recorded instruction given by Jesus would mean in our times & in their lives as His followers. The Great Commission is one of the most significant scriptures in the Bible. It is a calling from Jesus where He personally gives His divine action plan!
One common misunderstanding is that the Great Commission is to "preach the gospel" to everyone, that is, to make converts, but this is not the full scope of operations. What Jesus actually said was "to make disciples of all nations..." His desire is to reach the whole world, making disciples everywhere. To disciple means to teach, especially by example. It is to do all the things Jesus taught His original disciples to do, like healing the sick, cleansing lepers, casting out demons & raising the dead! Disciples continue to do what Jesus did & see signs following them! This is so the gospel can be effective as it is accompanied by power. While the Great Commission includes preaching the gospel, evangelizing nations, baptizing, missionary work, deliverance, signs & wonders, its emphasis is to make disciples in doing so. This is using the principle of multiplication & is the Lord's strategy to reach the world!
Matt. 28:118-20 "Then Jesus came to them & said, "All authority in heaven & on earth has been given to Me, therefore, go & make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in name of the Father, & of the Son & of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.' "
Encouragement to go Deeper:
As we prepare our hearts leading up to the GC Day of Prayer, meditate on Matt. 28:18-20 & Acts 1:8.
Pray the Holy Spirit releases greater understanding & His empowerment unto seeing the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Recognize you have been authorized & commissioned! Jesus is calling every believer to put action to their faith! Not running off doing our own thing, but as followers of Christ led by His Spirit receiving divine direction in the place of prayer. Pray the Spirit shows opportunities as we go about our lives to tell others about Jesus, to do the same works He did, & how to teach others to the same!
Get the Word Out:
